the menu options are slowly vanishing at first it was only the ascent guidance that wouldn't work but now most of the menu is gone!

You might want to edit this, redo the title to something like (bug) autopilot modes disappearing from menu.
Will make it easier to locate, and gives a good brief description for the devs.

Could you post the content of your GameData\MechJeb2\Plugins\PluginData\MechJeb2\mechjeb_settings_global.cfg file somewhere (pastebin, ... )

FAR would interfere with some function but it would not hide the item of the menu.
The config file looks fine, strange.

Try deleting/moving away all the file in the same directory than that file. You 'll loose your MJ file but the menu may come back.

It worked originally but after 1 flight it was gone again

Can you give me a list of all the dll you have in the gamedata folder ? Search for *.dll in the explorer and do a screenshot

Bare in mind my computer doesn't check this often so many of the things
there aren't actually in my game... anyway removed far because i really
need to cut down my mod count... as im on a terrible lappy at the moment as
i'm rebuilding my desktop pc. :D

If you're having issues with memory due to mods, try using the texture
reducing plugin. It doesn't lose much quality, and does the reductions on
the fly. At work so can't pull up the specific info, just do a Google for
KSP texture mod.

also I only have mods i will use all the parts in and if i only want 1 or 2
parts from a mod, i just take it out and put it in a different directory so
i don't waste memory.

Furthermore mechjeb also cuts down the menu in career mode.
