When KILL ROT is selected in SMARTASS and control is given to another part that doesn't face the same direction as the previous controller SMARTASS torques the craft into a spin. I'm assuming it sees the change in orientation as large derivative value and tries to correct. This can also happen when control is automatically given to another part eg. staging, docking and undocking.
