Suggestion: Create support structures to prevent cobblestone from falling

Is it possible to be able to build a support beam of sort and place in caves ever so many feet to prevent cave-ins? Support structures like what you see in abandoned mine shafts. And so many blocks outwards from the structure, gravity will not cause blocks to fall.
I'm not sure how to accomplish this, if it would need specially named blocks to build the structure from, if it's possible at all. But I thought might make a good improvement to the game and incentives to build realistic mines.
Thanks!
Lovely idea, also increases the danger of mine fires exponentionally. If you support your caves with wood, a creeper explodes, you ll have no more fun.
I think this idea is fantastic and I agree that a more realistic build with physics would make minecraft more exciting. I personally would like it if all the blocks worked like the scaffolding, that only a certain number of blocks can "fly" and then they fall down. It would allow a realistic bridge construction for example what I would find really cool.
