Water cannot flow into unrestricted subclaim
Expected Behavior
Water should be able to flow into the subclaim

- Create a subclaim
- Put water outside the subclaim
- Water cannot flow into it

Running without GriefPrevention

As an aside: subclaims is one of those things I also want to eventually remove from GP to be in an addon, or at least improve its implementation. Reason: complexity and maintainability: changes to claims and interactions between claims don't seem to also apply to subclaims.

I realize now that you're talking about water flowing OUT of a subclaim. That is intended behavior, because otherwise players could place water into subclaims where permitted and grief the primary claim. While the source may not be inside the subclaim, tracing the original source of water is far too performance-demanding and unreliable without complete block tracking.
If your machine must place water to function and you want players to be able to open only containers near it, you will have to claim more intelligently to account for that. You could funnel drops out farther from the base so that the subclaim does not impact the water flow or you could expand the subclaim to include the area that is bare of water.
