PermissionsEX causing lag and server crash with Spigot 1.10.2

Periodically I get this error below.
[21:45:47 INFO]: [Essentials] Lag Notice - Slow Permissions System (PermissionsEx) Response - Request took over 28.67ms!
[21:45:47 INFO]: [Essentials] Lag Notice - Slow Permissions System (PermissionsEx) Response - Request took over 28.427ms!
It causes the server to lock up and all players disconnect.
Anything we can check on?
