The bucket handling code doesn't seem to run that well in 1.9. There are crashes occurring when someone tries to use a bucket (whether it is on any AbyssalCraft liquid, or simply air). This is being investigated.

I pretty much said what was missing in the initial post, a null check to ensure the bucket is being used on a block, and not air! Issue resolved!
