I have an idea for a new Item you could add to the mod. A weed killer that you could either add to a sprinkler or apply it yourself to a crop that would prevent weeds from spawning on that crop for a set period of time. This could allow a person to go away from their crops a while to go mining or something.

Yes I have plans in mind for this, quite similar to your suggestion.
