Hood of Darkness and Cloak of Darkness not functioning

I want to use the Hood of Darkness, but I can not figure out how to use the abillity.
Would be nice if it was described in the Cave Compendiums.

Press G to activate special abilities, it can only be activated in the dark or during the night.
