I fed an elephant a few acacia blossoms and the heart effect did not show up, I assumed it was tamed and was able to mount it. While mounted I could not control its movement and was unable to dismount using shift, only moving the camera as if I was crouching. The elephant in question was an adult with no tusks.

Fully taming the same elephant allowed me to control and dismount it freely.
