There is only 1 egg laid, which should be 1-4 random, and then eggs can be laid anywhere or even on obsidian, but the eggs will teleport to the surrounding blocks, and the platypus will not avoid the eggs by itself. There is a high probability that it will spawn at the bottom and then burst on its own.
