Suggestion: one male animal for breeding multiple females?

Can a mechanic be implemented to have one male around several females with which he can breed.
I haven't tested yet if this is the case (still gathering all my mods for my modpack), but seems logical.
All extra males can be raised for food purposes I suppose. (Don't give milk, eggs, ...)
Extending that maybe male animals of the same species (cow, chicken, sheep, goat, ... ) could be aggresive towards one another? So you need to keep seperate pens for those or atleast for adults of breeding age.

This is an interesting idea, but it would change our 'mating' mechanic a bit since they work in pairs. But it's more true to the real world, so worth consideration. Thanks for the input.

I can make this a config option. Have to mess with the mating mechanic, but not top priority at the moment. Will get there eventually.

I mostly only know about cows but a bull can breed multiple depending on his age and the time he is with him .

I second this. I think you usually only keep one rooster for a bunch of hen as well. Bulls for cows. Stallions can also handle multiple mares.

Thanks for the input, guys.

In real life livestock and barnyard animal raising, it is normal practice to have a single male, generally chosen for the best genetics.

The "mating mechanic" of this mod is actually unrealistic, not sure why it has to remain the way it is.

Animals still like to be paired but not All the time with the male they like to be with their calf and or another female normally only at male when in heat and when they calf they normally want to go where they are hidden and normally I really don't think male is with them

commented

@aelfwyne While it is more realistic, it's not really a 'nice' aspect of animal breeding. So here we think it's a nicer game mechanic to let the breeding happen naturally, instead of having to manually inject sperm into cows.

@Tschipp Well, that depends on how modern you want it to be, I guess.
I don't see that @aelfwyne wrote anything about inseminating the female animals. Simply that one male should be able to mate with multiple females, as that is more realistic in general. And also "nicer" in my opinion ๐Ÿ‘

@Jomik you may be right, I may have misread it... it was just the first thing that came to mind when I read "chosen for the best genetics", which implies that the player does the breeding manually.

@Tschipp Hmm, I guess you can see it that way. I just read it that you slaughtered all bulls that didn't have good genetics, and then left the one that had the best with your cows ๐Ÿ˜„
Either way. Could you make in an option? So that the male animals can be set to mate with multiple females? I guess you could make an option that is something like "Male fertility timer" or something in that sense? And have that variable, so that you can simply set it so that the male wants to mate like, every second ๐Ÿ˜†

  • Unless you, at the moment, have it set so that they get paired up too?
commented

@Jovik Well, I've already seen male cows mate with multiple females, so that might already be in.

@Tschipp That might very well be the case! I mean, I do get multiple chicks and calves even though I only have 1 male of each. So I guess all is working as this issue wants.

So it's more of a clarification if this is what you want the mod to do :)

We will change this in 1.3

Hey, we're on 1.3.3 atm. Is this still in the pipeline or did I miss it in the patch notes?

Didn't make it in. Last minute debate at Animania HQ. It will go in, through, probably as a config option. Thanks for the bump.
