When hovering over items in the crafting plan, the opacity/color of the model overlay in the background will change (it will get darker). The same effect can be observed when JEI is open on the rendering of translucent items in the right panel (they will become darker while the tooltip is shown).
The effect goes away when the tooltip is no longer visible.
