Joined the linked discord. You cannot purchase your first skillpoints at present, at least in version 1.1.6-all for Minecraft 1.19.2, and this is apparently a known issue. As I was unable to find it listed in the Github Issues page or Curseforge comments, I am posting it here and in the Curseforge comments.
