it likes to cast really short, which can cause it to land on the land by your feet.
have tried looking up at different angles with little to no effect.

I just wanted to add a comment to this. I have noticed this when fishing because it would cast at my feet, then end up getting kicked for afking. I somewhat got around it by using tweakaroo to right click every couple of minutes, but it's not the best workaround.

Would it be possible to add some detection to check the distance the bobber is from the player? If the distance is < 1 block (?) then treat it as a failed cast and re-cast again. This would probably prevent players from fishing directly below their feet, but that's probably not much of a problem.

The mod simulates the equivalent of a right click and there is no mechanism to control the cast power, so this is very unlikely to be an issue with Autofish. If you were to post a video it may shed some light on what's going on.
