I personally like the look of crates a lot better without those icons and with the item in the middle. The information they convey can already be obtained from WAILA. An option to hide them would be really nice.

The point of the icons are so you don't need WAILA nor have to check every individual crate's tooltip to see which is/isn't unlocked or has a particular upgrade installed. They also convey meaning at a glance independent of language unlike a tooltip. Plus, they were specifically requested during development

This is exactly why I'm only asking for an option to hide them. Of course, it does make perfect sense to keep them on by default.
