[1.12.2] High CPU usage

Description:

Hello, i want to report that on my machine, i get an unusual high cpu usage with this mod.
This goes so far that it occupies easily 20-30% of my CPU.
This Problem especially occurs when loading chunks (it does not matter if the chunks have been generated and loaded before).

I write this because im not sure if this is expected behaviour, since i was certainly not expecting that this mod uses so much cpu, i was more prepared for an GPU impact, which is not the case at all.

However, if this is expected behaviour i would suggest a disclaimer on the CurseForge page since i just spent 4 hours of debugging my Modpack and JVM settings before discovering this and i think other people could have the same expectation as i had.

My Specs:

  • Minecraft 1.12.2
  • Forge 14.23.5.2847
  • Java 1.8.0_241 64-Bit (No additional startup args used)
  • Windows 10
  • AMD FX 6300 (6 Cores at 3.5 Ghz - Not Overclocked)
  • NVIDIA GTX 660 with 2GB

Can you elaborate a bit on that number? Do you mean Minecraft uses 20-30% of your CPU, or that having Better Foliage installed uses an extra 20-30% compared to without it?

Yes, i mean BetterFoliage uses this extra.

To be as exact as possible, i wrote myself a powershell script which measures the average CPU usage over the time of 60 seconds, taking each second a measurement. (So 60 measurements over the course of 1 minute).

Preface

For both tests i used the seed 22222 and constantly flew over heavy wooded areas around the spawn.
Overall specs are the same as in the initial issue report.

First test (without BetterFoliage)

Installed mods:

  • Optifine 1.12.2 HD U F5

Average measured CPU: 55.7%

Second test (with BetterFoliage)

Installed mods:

  • Optifine 1.12.2 HD U F5
  • BetteFoliage 1.12 2.3.1

Average measured CPU: 75.9%

I also am having a similar issue. I am playing on 1.12.2 also, on an imac, with about 95-100 mods. i also use same version of optifine...

Having tried almost anything, I can say using "foamfix" along with these also increases the cpu load. removing it helped a lot. After that, it seemed to decrease the cpu load to very normal levels when ı disabled Better Foliage completely, so i starting playing around with aspects of the mod.

Removing a mod aspect is never a fix, but helps temporarily. In my case, disabling the falling leaves changes the game really. (I never thought playing without fan noise was possible :P I was about to loose hope :P)

I know it's never a fix. But I hope it helps keep anyone that has similar issue going until the creators figure out a fix. I does get super annoying otherwise...

(PS. I always thought the extra leaves aspect would be the one to cause the heavy cpu load, but it seems I am fine by only disabling the falling leaves or like decreasing it to a 0.01 rate)
