I was trying to make a quest that completes when you craft a wooden shovel and pressed back so I could see it work and it crashed.

I think Funwayguy has fixed this problem in his last commit Funwayguy/StandardQuestingPack@52ec1c2 on StandardExpension.

Known crash fixed in the SE 161 beta build (needs BQ 305). Unfortunately that build isn't compatible with other expansions and isn't considered entirely stable yet.

Altenatively you can just install JEI for the time being.
