What happened?

I've had this happen a few times now, both when the portal was in a dense area, so maybe has something to do with the portal search code searching way too many blocks?

Basically though, in singleplayer, I simply finish the portal, add the eternal crystals to the pedestals, then nothing happens, and the internal server becomes basically unresponsive. I can no longer switch between gamemodes, can't locate biomes/structures, and the world never finishes saving when going back to menu, leaving me to have to forcefully kill the game.
