What happened?

the cave pumpkins wont grow unless you use bone meal I've tried different spacing and added more room to grow I don't know what's going on but they wont grow. And I know this isn't a bug per say but the cave pumpkin has no tool for it so no matter what tool is used to brake it, its the same speed
