This is very much a "works as intended." Otherwise, Armored Elytra would be waay too overpowered.

Very sad, makes it useless, should be at least configurable.

For day-to-day flight, you can always use a crystalite elytra, which has the same glide as vanilla elytra and defense buffs about on par with diamond (IIRC).

But the Armored Elytea is very much not "useless." It's a netherite chestplate that negates fall damage and allows for vertical movement. It comes in clutch for multi-level trial chambers or for quick escapes during a high-level raid.
