A commonly used feature with nether portals is that they can be broken automatically with water. Whenever I've tried, it plays the portal break sound but then bugs the portal. If you've tried breaking it with water, it won't ever break unless you break it on the other end. I've been able to remove all of the obsidian on the overworld side and the portal image persists.
