A description of the issue

For whatever reason, I don't have any access to ME. I've been trying to do everything possible without it but I've hit a roadblock. The main thing I wanted to do was the simple brews. I trough a mandrake root in, then ectoplasm. The potion turns brown! I've watched a couple of tutorials to see if I'm just doing something wrong, but nothing seems to work! not to mention I no longer see a bar on the side of my screen, I saw it once for a couple of minutes, and that was it. I'm not sure if that's normal or not though.
