Apologies if this is mean to be the way it is but I was testing these out and I would assume that they pick up stuff one block in every direction (without mana pool) making a cube around itself. However it does not seem to be picking up items on the blocks above itself.

For example in the below picture I put an item on each of the blue wool and only 2 of them were picked up.
