I cannot change mode or bind anything with the Wand of the forest

I'm playing a new single player map since my server is temporarily down. I just started with Botania on the new map and I noticed that I cannot change mode of the Wand of the forest or bind my mana spreader to my mana pool?
It gives me the visual jumpy mode when I try to change the mode of the wand, but there's no sound and it doesn't change the mode.
