Wrenching the middle of extraction pipes doesn't change its direction

I am unable to wrench the middle of extraction pipes to change direction. Wrenching the sides of the extraction pipes does chnage its direction but this may cause quite a bit of confusion to people who don't know you have to wrench the sides.
