Engines will not allow you to daisy chain them unless you put them in a stack, instead of next to each other.

i'm gona guess that with 'in a stack' you mean putting them on top of each other? if so that won't chain them eighter, engines just default to that orientation when they don't have anything to connect to but won't transmit power if the TE above them doesn't accept it
