Suggestions:

  • Look at other mods which have done custom models based on existing blocks. Simple Covers by bdew, ArchitectureCraft (open source) by Greg Ewing and Chisels&Bits (open source) by AlgorithmX2 come to mind.
  • Use MCMultiPart! It will let you put multiple things in one block space and it has a very active development team. It's also going into Forge in 1.9.4, likely.
  • Talk to fry, AKA RainWarrior, AKA the guy who handles 1.8+ Forge rendering. I recommend #charset on irc.esper.net.

(If you need help with anything, Mineshopper, let me know and I'll do my best)

Yeah, I think Ama would be a good choice to take care of Carpenter's Blocks. I'd really love to see them return for MC 1.10 as well... Chisels & Bits is all nice but they didn't add slopes only "full" pixel blocks while Carpenter's Blocks did have smooth slopes in a simple and configurable way.

Really would love to see it back alive.

I can probably do it for MC 1.11, now that MCMP's API is much cleaner and the microblock rendering logic is being generalized :)

I just tried ArchitectureCraft for a good 20 minutes before stripping it out of my modpack, as it is very painful to use. I would love to see Carpenter's brought up to 1.10.2 (since most mods are fairly stable on this build).

I'd really love to help out... But I'm struggling with subblocks (like wool) at the moment.

I may or may not be able to help with MCMultiPart support... or something... ;P
I can also help out a bit with rendering since I need to do something similar for MCMicroBlock (or Forge Microblock, when MCMP gets merged into Forge). I wouldn't mind taking over the concept and integrating it into MCMB if nobody is up for maintaining the mod in 1.9+, but I think it'd be nice if Carpenter's Blocks was still a thing :)

I think if you'd take on the mantle of maintainer/ new dev/whatever... that it would be best if it was kept seperate. That way you wont bloat either mod, and keep established brands intact. (Not to bitch on you in any way)

I appreciate the interest! I have been chipping away at the basics for a 1.9 port. I understand block states fairly well now, but I have yet to figure out the rendering technicalities.
