The Redstone relay does not support cardinal directions (as conveniently done in Advanced Peripherals). In fact, up and down coincide with the top and bottom, and the cardinal directions can be converted to relatives by getting the direction of the relay block, if there are no other ways.

I'm afraid I'm not going to change this. This was intentionally done, to match the existing design of the redstone API — CC tries to avoid exposing cardinal directions when possible, as it doesn't really make sense within the model of CC — after all, your computer doesn't have a compass in it!
