Not possible.
The whole thing of 1.0 was reworking how Chat Heads places the icons inside the text.
Before 1.21.9 there was no standard way to do this, so every mod wanting that just did its own thing (including Chat Heads), resulting in conflicts left and right - and I think I did manage to fix most of them anyway.
Text improvement mods like Modern UI and Caxton simply did not support this at all though.

In 1.21.9, Mojang added "object" text components which allow rendering any sprite or player head inside text.
So not only is there now a standard way for rendering icons in text, but it was essentially necessary to support it if one wants to stay away from the pre-1.21.9 compatibility mess, hence the large 1.0 rework.
Also, just as a side note, the version number of pre-1.21.9 Chat Heads being less than 1 does not mean it's "lesser", "unfinished" or "unstable" - it has the same feature set and is still supported as ever. It's just how we ended up versioning the thing.
