On team chessboards when players are located together, allow each play to start a beneficial effect that lasts for a period of time, resetting with each move and growing in strength to a certain level.

I think looking into what consumes random ticks within the chunk would be worthwhile, then making the buff something that fiddles random ticks, or their equivalent would be a good starting place.
