What is the deal behind changing everyone's elytra texture? Is this update to stop some potential malware or something?

I only realized after hours of filming that I was wearing a weird cape while editing the video. This is very sad for me.

Morning o/

Just saw all this stuff, post is writted on 06/07/2025, I'm playing on MC 1.20.1 and latest CICADA version is 0.13.1 released on 28/06/2025

Is CICADA 0.13.1 fixing the cape thing for 1.20.1 or should I wait for another update before making my users migrate to a new version?

Thanks

TL;DR: Old versions of the CICADA mod hammer enjarai.dev with nonstop cape requests, overwhelming the dev's server.

Fix: Update your mod.

I cant Update the mod, I have made an entire fabric modpack on 1.21.1 for our server and many of the mods are not updated to the latest versions and are only available on the one were using, since I dont know how to contact the moddev directly, can somebody tell me either how to get rid of the ugly capes or find a good replacemant for show me your skin for 1.21.1? (I only use Cicada for show me your skin)

I have cicada in the form of Recursive Resources on 1.20.1, I installed the new cicada version separately and that fixed the cape issue, but I'm curious whether that still sends the request to the server or not

Whose idea was this anyway

Actual Fix: Remove Cicada and any associated mods and never install anything by this author ever again.

I really regret having to do this, but as others in this thread have explained, my own past mistakes have forced my hand. This is my fault, and I own up to that. This is the only way I have of reaching all the people who have outdated versions of the mod.

This will not happen again.

If this makes you want to stop using my mods, I wont blame you. Please do as you wish.

For the record, here's a full explanation of the situation I posted on fedi:

0.13.1 fixes the issue on all affected minecraft versions, yes.

I've made a small addon mod that basically implements the fix that new cicada versions have in older versions:
https://legacy.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/cicada-cape-fix

This should work in any context where updating the main mod is not feasible for whatever reason.

dont understand why some people are being rude about this i (and everyone else on my server) found the capes thing funny. its a fun solution to a difficult problem of finding a way to send an update notice when you dont have one already implemented. u guys need to have some joy and whimsy in your life.

Well that's kind of a programmer's art style cape:D
I didn't even know where did i used this mod and even not having it in my mod folder..

I laughed myself silly. @enjarai if you wish, please take this one fellow developer's opinion: for all the players who are mad at you because you told them to update to a version that's not broken, they are apparently wanting you to suffer so they don't have to click a button. There's a laugh for you. The human race, everyone. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

I love your mods; keep up the good work; don't let yourself burn out.

A mod is not supposed to make requests to random servers that you cannot turn off.

Spyware removed by editing hosts, life goes on.

in case you didn't know (or can't read, which is way too common unfortunately), you can just update instead complaining about a thing that the update fixes

No, thanks, I am not going to risk breaking dependencies with other mods, this is a much easier solution.

you can also read a few comments earlier to see this, if updating is an issue
