The smoky, rose, and sulfur quartz ores are harder to mine than the default nether quartz - they require higher than wood mining level, while you can mine the default nether quartz just fine with a wood pickaxe. The quartz crystals do not share this distinction, they can be mined just fine with a wooden pickaxe.
