Basically, items which a gem can craft into nine of, and nine can combine into a full gem.

I've seen a few of these across mods, most often beekeeping mods. Most commonly they're shards, and less often fragments.

probably more trouble than it's worth - and usually if someone is making gem fragments they need a special tool to split and a compressor to combine, placing it solidly out of scope
