Description of feature request

This suggestion is largely inspired by Mediumcore. In Mediumcore, each death reduces your max health by one heart until you are reduced to three hearts. In the suggested mechanic, dying with Wither Sickness (not necessarily by/to it) incurs a similar effect. e.g. the first time you die, you respawn with only nine hearts. Die again, you respawn with only eight hearts. Repeat until you get and consume Golden Apple Stew or hit a minimum.

Why: Modded environments often provide mechanics that negate the consequences of dying (corpses, teleportation, portable bases/spawn points, backpacks, etc.) These mechanics often turn Wither Sickness from a threat to a mostly ignorable annoyance, as you can shank yourself to reset the max health drain at the cost of some XP & time and be on your merry way. Respawning with a max health drain already in effect that increases each time the player dies kneecaps tactical suicide strategies and turns Wither Sickenss into a threat again without removing the utilities that the aforementioned "death QOL" mechanics from other mods provide. It also turns Wither Sickness into an evolving threat past respawning, forcing players to consider and plan around it in a more long-term manner.

Config options:

  • Whether or not "respawn with reduced max health" is in effect
  • Max health penalty for respawning (by default, one heart)
  • Minimum max health (by default, three hearts)

Should definitely be configurable

I think something like this was suggested before but I would like for something like this to be introduced, you should not just be able to intentionally die to avoid any repercussions

I agree, this could probably be fit in whenever we revamp wither sickness
