Do you need KubeJS on 1.20.1? Or will a datapack do the job?

After browsing the github, i copied a datapack and edited the veins and drills to what i want.
But will adding the datapack to the world folder be enough?
Or is KubeJS mandatory?
MCserver: 1.20.1
Loader: Forge 47.4.0
I can upload the datapack if needed :)
