The clock should be wound up like in real life instead of building giant cogs to power it.

I think what you're thinking is adding a clockwork coil/spring, which can build up energy and then release it over time.
Ye in real life clocks didnt need any waterwheel to get powered instead you wind it up by hand with a special tool.
