Filter doesn't work with roller, but still disappears

Describe the Bug
When I try to use a filter in the "Paving Material" slot on a roller, I hoped it would work like a deployer and use any material from the contraption inventory that matches the filter to pave. This would, for example, make it convenient to use my mining contraption near the surface, deep under the ground, or even in the nether without needing to disassemble, reconfigure, and re-assemble it.
What happened was that the "Paving Material" slot did not accept a filter, but it still took the filter out of my inventory.
Reproduction Steps
- Use a filter on the "Paving Material" slot on a roller
- Get "Cannot use this item here." error
- The filter is removed from inventory, but not added to the "Paving Material" slot.
Expected Result
One of the following:
- The filter should remain in inventory
or
- The roller should accept and use the filter
