side hopper into depot doesn't work as it should

Describe the Bug

When I put a hopper to the side of a create depot and put (for example) a stack of dirt in the hopper, the hopper places one block of dirt in the depot.
But when I take the item out of the depot (manualy or with an automatic arm) the hopper doesn't refill the depot with a new dirt block.

Reproduction Steps

  1. Place a depot
  2. Place a hopper facing the depot
  3. Put multiple of any item in the hopper
  4. Take the placed item out of the depot

Expected Result

The hopper feeds a new item into the depot

Additional Context

When I drop the dirt next to the depot (not onto it) the hopper gets an update and places a new block on the depot.

Putting another empty hopper on top of the first one (feeding into it from above) fixes the issue, since the bottom one gets updated. Doing the same with aditional hoppers from the side doesn't work though.
