Brass tunnel filtering not working when placed on a belt without spaces inbetween

basically, if I make one long brass tunnel belt and even one of them has a side filter then the whole belt stalls the moment something not matching that filter to fix this there has to be a block of empty space behind the filtering tunnel.
I just want to make sure this is an intentional thing as it does make machines bigger and therefore more complex and not a bug.

to specify the belt stalls when an item not matching the side filter goes through and there is at least one more tunnel block in front of the side filter tunnel block.
