since it's the client crashing and not the server it should work. i'm having the same problem and trying to fix it. what i've found so far is that if you have a ticking entity and you load into the game the client crashes. (ticking entity meaning a cog, motor, etc that's rotating)

It's a mod issue, and optifine's issue page is already filled with unresolved issues so it's probably going to get buried
