[Request/Suggestion] Way to push and spin simultaneously

I'm not completely sure about the vocabulary to use to best explain my suggestion, so I will do so by describing a problem I'm having and suggesting a solution.

I enjoy seeing rotational movement in Minecraft. Its something I enjoy. So, with the mechanical bearings I was excited about the ability to make a rotating harvester setup for my farm. I successfully prototyped and built one. It has a mechanical bearing in the center, then a single row of blocks with harvesters attached, a chest, etc. It works well, but if I ever have to stop the rotation and the machine converts back into blocks, it will break the crops and destroy the farmland underneath it.

To solve this issue, I wanted to make the rotating assembly 2 blocks in the air, then push them into place with a piston. Once in place, the assembly would rotate as normal. The problem is, in order to avoid breaking the crops, I want the piston to place only in starting position. When the machine is not placed, however, I have no way to provide rotational energy.

Suggestion 1: Provide a method to provide kinetic energy to a machine which is being moved. This could perhaps be a special type of belt between two shafts, or a telescoping shaft, or just a pair of blocks, one "placed" and one "mobile" similar to the item transfer.

Suggestion 2: A single block meant for the purpose of both extending and rotating could also solve this issue. It doesn't actually have to do both at the same time, simply extending first and then beginning to rotate would be good enough.

Both of these have merit, I believe. In addition to harvesters I can think of interesting contraptions like spinning-head drills, possibly a spiral-staircase placer, etc.
