I'd like to know if it would be possible to add more variation, like maybe 1 Bauble for each slot, by effect. That would allow, for example, to have both NightVision and WaterBreathing, which would be nice for water-based exploration/map.

Feel free to make a fork and mess around. After you made something you're happy with make a pull request then ill check it out. I don't have time to fully help you but i can help with the basic questions.

Also i considered porting the mod to 1.14 if i have some spare time. using https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/curios . the naming is quite unfortunate

I personally only use/know 1.12.2, so any code I make would be for the 1.12.2 version, but if you port to 1.14+, I'll see if I can still help then.
