HUD is at-a-glance information, currently the animation of the information means it's random wether the information is there or not when glancing at the armor bar... and if it's not you have to wait until the information becomes available. I love the look and the minimalism of it, but I would really want an option to turn off the animation and have it always show (I use outline mode which allows it to show as well)

It seems the animation is played intermittently, controlled by ArmorBarRenderer.java. Changing the 12 on line 416 to 127, the animation (aura mode) runs continuously.
