Here is a dog that I want to have as a comrade. However, when I give him a treat, his model becomes vanilla. It is very sad.
I propose to add support for models from other mods for combat dogs. In this image, a model of a dog from Better Animal Models mod.

Sorry to poke my shnoz into a closed suggestion, but I figured since I put up a suggestion on Better Animal Models end of the github page, I'd post here as well.

Maybe this could be accomplished through the use of a datapack?
Doggy Talents already gives chance to players being able to add custom textures.
I'd imagine models are much more complex.

I would take this over to the makers of Better Animal Models, this seems to be something that they would have to implement on their side (as they have done with Sophisticated wolves)
