Crash with certain skins - Cannot invoke "net.minecraft.class_2960.method_12836 ()" because "skin" is null

When rendering specific skins, which by my observations are using undocumented feature for making "capes" using ears causes this error.
What's wrong with it and how to fix it?

UPD: found out it was mod Wavey Capes
Is there any way to make them compatible?
