I'm seeing the same thing with ngircd irc server. It's a password protected irc server, but not sure if that matters or not. (honestly thinking about retiring this irc server and moving things to esper.net anyway, but thought this might help.)

Connecting to password protected ngircd never joins channel until I manually issue join command from console. It does successfully connect to the server and logs one exception.

Connecting to irc.esper.net still logs some unhandled messages, but connects and joins with no issue.
