This only seems to be a problem for non-smooth sign lighting, as smooth lighting seems to shade it more sensibly:

This is a vanilla lighting engine issue as far as I know, so there's nothing much I can do about this.
Will be left open for fix suggestions and other consideration for another few weeks or so.
