Can't place re-fillable items on pedestal

Whenever I try to right-click or shift+right click place an refillable item (orb, pendant) etc. on the pedestal, it doesn't work.
Workaround is to drop the items via hopper into the pedestal and take it out of the pedestal once refilled.
