Currently, the Hammer only supports Blocks as the result of a hammer recipe, items are not possible.

In my opinion, the API should support items as drops from destroying blocks with a hammer.

This came up on a Livestream of the developer of ExCompressum, who wanted to add wood chippings as a drop when hammering wood, which did not work as chippings are an item, not a block.

And that is what I get for looking at the wrong branch, this is already done in the dev branch, so sorry for the annoyance.
