It's a bit unreliable, but sometimes when a gravel slab drops to the ground, it'll land on the upper half of the block:

It will land in the upper half if it is an upper-half slab. This will not be changed

Oh strange, I didn't realise it had to do with where I placed the slab on the wall. That is very odd behaviour, but fair enough.
